Ginger-beverages in the spotlight

As ginger-lovers, we are excited to hear about all the new ginger drinks and ginger-flavored drinks hitting the market.  For recoup, this means we are on to something.  People love ginger and are demanding it more and more!

We wanted to take a minute and highlight some new innovations and launches.

First, let’s make a big distinction:

Ginger Beverage vs. Ginger-Flavored Beverage

Ginger Beverage: A drink that uses a measurable amount of real ginger (At least 1 teaspoon per serving) that can also have the health benefits associated with ginger.

Health Benefits associated with ginger: Boosts Immunity, Anti-Inflammatory, Aids Digestion, Settles Upset Stomach/Reduces Nausea, Improves Circulation, Reduces Muscle Soreness

Ginger-Flavored Beverage: A drink that uses ginger-flavor, or a tiny amount of ginger extract, won’t have health benefits, but can still have a nice ginger-flavored kick. Take Sprite Ginger for instance, they use flavors give it the ginger taste, but there is no ginger in the beverage.

Ginger Beverages (Use real ginger)

Up Mountain Switchel

Switchel is a beverage made with apple cider vinegar, ginger root, and maple syrup that is known for its digestive benefits.  Apple cider vinegar has a ton of health benefits (including regulating digestion and PH), but can be hard to pallet due to its strong flavor, so Up Mountain Switchel has created some delicious recipes that can be consumed hot or cold.  The Cayenne version is on fire!  The ginger in switchel also helps settle the stomach and stimulate digestion, making this a healthy drink after a meal.

 Recoup

Our personal favorite, for obvious reasons, recoup uses 2 teaspoons of pressed organic ginger in every bottle, the same amount used in clinical studies to support muscle recovery, digestion and immunity. Ginger is known as a powerful anti-inflammatory, which can help ease muscle soreness and reduce painful inflammation after a workout.

Drink a recoup within an hour after a work out to feel the restorative effects.  It can also be consumed first thing in the morning or during your afternoon slump since ginger is naturally energizing and can help aid digestion. Recoup comes in three ginger-powered flavors: Watermelon + Blood Orange + Ginger, Pineapple + Coconut + Ginger and Lemon + Lime + Ginger. Try them all with a Variety Pack.

Monfefo Ginger Shots

Cold-pressed ginger juice with honey and lemon.  These simple and powerful 2 oz shots are made in Brooklyn and can be shot straight or mixed with warm water for a healthy pick-me-up.

Homemade ginger drinks

Celebs like Selena Gomez and Serena Williams have all touted the benefits of ginger. With all the recent focus on immunity and keeping healthy, lots of homemade ginger tea recipes are also getting attention.

Martha Stewart recently shared her favorite home remedy, her Brown Sugar Tea recipe: combine a two-inch piece of fresh ginger (skin on, sliced thinly,) ¼ cup of light or dark brown sugar, one lemon (skin on, sliced), and four cups of water in a saucepan. Bring all of the ingredients to a boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. "You have the most delicious drink that is soothing to an irritated throat and so beneficial to your general health," says Martha.

Ginger-Flavored Beverages: (Use ginger flavoring, so no ginger health benefits)

 Sprite “drops” Sprite Ginger

Whether you like their products or not, the Coca-Cola Company is a marketing machine.  This year they are making a big bet on Sprite Ginger with a sizable campaign, including TV ads, digital marketing and a capsule collection of clothing and merchandise.  If you live in NYC you may have seen giant murals or outdoor digital ads on those charging station call boxes (NYC’s replacement of the phone booth.). Sprite ginger promises a hint of ginger and a unique twist on the Sprite flavor people love.  Available in regular and diet.

Starbucks Iced Golden Ginger Drink

Starbucks released two iced coconut-milk beverages: a Golden Ginger Drink and a Pineapple Matcha Drink.  Both use coconut milk instead of a traditional milk for a vegan alternative that taps into the excitement around plant-based milks.

The Golden Ginger drink is a combination of coconut milk, pineapple ginger syrup (water, sugar, flavors) and a blend of natural flavors with turmeric extract.  It sounds delicious, but should be noted that it only has ginger-flavor and a tiny bit of turmeric extract, so don't expect it to have health benefits.
